THE MIDDLE AGE AND THE ELDERLY: BEWARE OF THE "DRUG ADMIRING MENTALITY"
Mild pain killers and antipyretics °]e.g., panadol or aspirin°^ that kill mild pains and bring down low-grade fevers, may seem to
work even for other minor ailments. However, these should be discontinued once flu symptoms are over. Opioids that are
closely linked to morphine, are used only for severe pains of advanced cancer patients. These are addicting after using 1-2
weeks; if stopped abruptly, may cause the well-known "withdrawl symptoms". Self medication is very risky as doctors have to
titrate skillfully these narcotic drugs against the pain control requirements. Various sedatives and sleeping pills are definitely habit
forming, let alone various adverse effects and the "hang over" phenomenon next morning - just like after being drunk the night
before. Excessive anti-tussives or "cough syrups" containing codeine or even ephedrine °]for asthma°^, have severe side effects
and are habit forming. Some drugs, e.g., ketamine, are extremely risky when mixed with other drugs. Purgatives are also habit
forming. Antibiotics and antivirals are used strictly according to doctors' directions. Unlike advertisement promotions, there are
no "secret potions".
