THE LEGEND OF THE LONGEST SURVIVOR OF HEART TRANSPLANT:YANG
Following our previous coverage on Yang, this is an invited story on this 17th anniversary. Yang used to be a butcher in his Village
but his popular business had also affected his married life. When Yang met an attractive young lady Zhao from a neighboring
village, life changed. Her husband was an obsessive gambler. When Yang had a flu and ended up in myositis inflammation of his
heart muscles, it deteriorated steadily despite treatments; he was in near collapse upon the tragic drowning of his 12-year-old
son. Aggravated by the bereavement, Yang's married life came to an end, as triggered by Zhao's visit to his home. Totally fed up
with her husband, Zhao also had a divorce. However, her love toward Yang was genuine, as she supported him totally and even
sold her house to pay his expenses. Fortunately, the Hospital waived all charges, including those expensive immuno-suppressive
medications after the transplant - in 1992, it was the first case in Harbin City. Later, they even had a kid and the Hospital gave
Yang a license for a wet-market stall, thence, a fast food kiosk. As the longest survivor for heart transplant in China, Yang is very
grateful.
