DOES VEGETABLE POWDER HAVE NUTRITIONAL OR HEALTH CARE VALUE?
There is a multitude of various vegetable powders on sale, each with lots of health care or nutritional claims, starting with
pumpkin powder – said to be good for diabetics. Other vegetable powders claim to have kept the nutritional values without your
processing, chewing or digestion. However, during their processing, e.g. at high temperatures, nutrition is lost, let alone that
vegetables inherently lack protein and fat. The worst are claims that these powders are useful for disease treatment. Specialists
would advise that, conceptually, food is different from health care items which, in turn, are different from medications. Thus, as
food is food, we should never take such food as medicine, not even as health care items. From the perspectives of traditional
Chinese medicine, bitter gourd powder becomes swollen inside the stomach and gives a full-stomach feeling; this may be useful
for sliming. However, excessive bitter gourd affects the absorption of minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, etc., and other trace
elements – definitely detrimental to our health. Thus, TCM physicians advises against such for their “han” or “chill” effect. Be very
careful!
