THINK THRICE BEFORE UNDERGOING LASER FOR SHORTSIGHTEDNESS
A Mr Chang had a ruptured eyeball upon a minor hit – he has had radial keratotomy (RK) more than 10 years before. Although
RK for short-sightedness is replaced by Lasik (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis): much finer tissue etching at the molecular
level – the excimer laser cuts neat incisions on the cornea of the eye (keratectomy operation), the safety of it is exaggerated
commercially. In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) had warnings on “safety in the long term”
for Lasik; in the US, statistics showed that 5%-15% of such patients require re-operation for pain, corneal displacement,
abrasions or defects, infections, astigmatism, poor night vision and glares, etc. With her high incidence rate of short-sightedness,
China sees a very rapid development of such operations ever since 1993. As no operation is “perfectly safe”, a detail and
cautious pre-operative assessment is mandatory – especially for such destructive procedures. Avoid being too complacent –
even if spectacles are not required, risks for complications of short-sightedness, e.g., glaucoma, retinal detachment, etc., are
still there!
