THE "PILGRIM'S PROGRESS": AN INTERVIEWWITH PROF WANG XING-GUO, VICE-CHANCELLOR,
BEIJING UNIVERSITY OF CHINESE MEDICINE & PHARMACOLOGY
In 1981, Wang surpassed many to be under the very demanding Prof Liu Du-zhou; affirming "Emperor's Canon of Medicine", "The
Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases", a readable summary on exogenous febrile diseases was written. The necessary
modernization of TCM would not go against tradition; to benefit most people, we should further develop TCM in the light of
modern science - unrealistic and counterproductive to expect TCM to be forever static amidst rapid modern technology advances.
The integration with the West tackling isolated pathologies is one of the strategies to further develop TCM as TCM regulates and
prevents the effect on the whole system, using simple, convenient and inexpensive methods. As a Chief Scientist of the National
Key Basic Research and Development Program (973), Wang investigates the patho-physiology of symptomatology in TCM.
Modern science: not the only standard to assess the true nature of TCM. Workers on integration require profound Chinese culture,
consolidated TCM and modern medicine and scientific knowledge, let alone clinical skill and experience: a "Pilgrim's Progress"!
