WOULD KISSING SPREAD
DISEASES?
Kissing expresses love and
passion. However, with the ex-
change of saliva, diseases may
spread: tuberculosis, viral
hepatitis, flu, mumps, syphilis,
German measles, glandular
fever, scarlet fever etc.; even
AIDS - if there are mucosal
breakages or ulcers. Kissing
also spreads syphilis and her-
pes simplex of the genitalia; the
type 1 herpes simplex virus af-
fects the lips. Even skin cancer
may spread likewise - although
the new "herpes type 8" virus
is usually related to AIDS, the
spread is through the skin as
35% of such patients have the
viruses in the saliva but only
1%, the external genitalia and
anus. Spreading mainly through
the gut, the hepatitis A and E
viruses and the H pylori bacte-
ria (that cause gastritis and
ulcers), are found in the mouth.
80% of us have gum inflamma-
tion or "gingivitis" - as each day,
easily 2-3 cc of blood oozes out,
the potential route of spread is
not only through the saliva but
also the blood! Historically, ad-
vocates condemned kissing.
With the potential of spreading
AIDS, even Hollywood has less
kissing scenes. Hopefully, the
habit gradually dies down - we
should really have a more hy-
gienic way of expressing our
passion!
