SAVOURING MT
HUANGSHAN: THE "NO. 1
MOUNTAIN ON EARTH"
Xidi, an ancient picturesque
village in Southern Anhui, has fa-
mous stone carvings and pre-
served wooden residences with
beautiful brick carvings. The
nearby Mt Huangshan is unique
with 4 wonders: fantastic pines,
grotesque rock formation, sea of
clouds and hot springs. Out of the
72 peaks, 3 are phenomenal and
known as Lotus Peak, Bright
Summit Peak and Celestial Capi-
tal Peak that is most famous, all
3 are over 1,800 meters. With the
rapid altitude change, the climate
and vegetation also varied rather
abruptly: plants on the summit, on
the middle levels and at the foot
belong to the frigid, temperate
a n d s u b t r o p i c a l z o n e s
respectively. Even the sceneries
of the front and back of Mt
Huangshan are vastly different.
Almost every rock has a pine tree
growing out of the crevice, with
gnarled roots and branches, some
of these are literally century-old.
At an altitude above the clouds,
viewing these from above enabled
unique and wondrous light-ef-
fects - the basis of the phenom-
enal "sea of clouds". The beauty
of the Grand Canyon is beyond
words. Despite the, very narrow,
demanding and steep passages,
the trip refreshes our spirits and
outlook.
