THE SUDDEN DEATH OF
HOUYAO MIN: RISK
FACTORS OF CORONARIES
& STROKES
At the age of 56, a famous
crosstalk actor Hou Yao Min died
suddenly of heart attack, even
though he did not smoke or drink.
According to a large, international
research of 52 countries (including
6,000 Chinese) on risk factors of
acute myocardial infarct (death of
heart muscle) as presented at the
European Society of Cardiology
Congress, 2004, it was found that
9 factors were responsible for
90.4% of all cardiac infarcts:
abdominal obesity, hypertension,
d i abe t es , h i gh cho l es t e r o l ,
smoking, stress, lack of physical
exercises, inadequate vegetables,
fruits and mild drinking (that has a
protective effect). "Stress" had, for
the first time, been incriminated as
a risk factor for acute myocardial
infarct. Other newly identified
c l o s e l y r e l a t e d f a c t o r s ,
e.g., elevated serum C-reactive pro-
tein (indicating active inflammation
of coronaries), elevated serum
homocysteine, elevated plasma
fibrinogen, etc., are getting their
respective attentions. Taking diets
rich in folic acid (including folic acid
supplements) may help to lower the
elevated serum homocysteine that
predisposes to free radicals.
Despite research on new factors,
traditional ones are still commonly
responsible for infarcts.
