OF BAMA VILLAGERS
UNVEILED
The Yao Autonomous County
of Bama, Guangxi, was elected as
the 5th hometown of longevity of
the world by the World Natural
Science Convention. Among the
240,000 population of Bama, 74 of
them were over 100 years old in
2004; by now, this has risen to 76.
With an increasing number of
centenarians, Bama is the world's
only hometown of longevity with
such increases. It is remarkable that
these centenarians are still
enjoying reasonable sight and
hearing; none of them had died
from hypertension, diabetes, stroke
or cancer. Workers studying their
secret had found out that their diet
was most relevant - low calorie, low
fat, low salt, low cholesterol;
paradoxically, they also take
inadequate proteins and other
nutrients, yet, they live longest
despite such obvious nutritional
defects that are responsible for their
small stature and even a "malnutri-
tion look". Apparently, such under-
nutrition diets would be grossly in-
adequate for any athletes but suffi-
cient for the elderly. As every year,
millions of Chinese are still dying
of coronaries, strokes and diabetes,
the longevity secret of Bama Villag-
ers is highly relevant to the rapidly
aging Chinese population.
