The liver
is
a "silent organ"
critical
to
life, hence its
name,
"liver".
lt
metabolizes various
sugars
or
carbohydrates,
fats,
proteins, vitamins
and
hormones; converts
glucose
into
glycogen
for
storage; when
blood glucose is low, it
auto-
matically reconverts glycogen
into
glucose. The
liver
secretes
bile and bile salts
for
fat
digestion,
preventing steator-
rhea (diarrhea due to
excessive
fat
in
the
gut). Albumin
that
is
criticalto
maintain the "body" of
the blood (preventing
excessive
water
in
tissue:
"edema"),
is
produced
by
the
liver.
The
liver
and
the
gall bladder
are
"in
the
same boat"
-
metabolites,
e.9.,
bilirubin
(from
red
cell
degradation) and
cholesterol
are excreted through
the
bile,
obstruction to which
leads to
"jaundice" that eventually
poi-
sons
the brain.
Gall
stones may
form with too
thick,
sluggish
or
infected
bile.
Apart
from
natu-
ral killer
(NK)
and
NK "T" cells
(NKT), interferons and
protec-
tive
complements,
the
liver's
many Kuptfer
cells
kill bacteria
and
prevent
generalized
"septicemia".
Although
an effec-
tive
detoxifying
organ,
it
be-
comes "cirrhotic"
with
alcohol
consumption. Avoid also unnec-
essary medications or herbs!
