BCG: AN
EFFECTIVE WEAPON TO
PREVENT TUBERCULOSIS
Despite
modern science,
tuberculosis
(TB),
a
bacterialin-
fection by an acid-fast
bacilli
(AFB),
especially
of
the
lungs,
is
still
very
much
roaming
around
and
threatening human
lives, especially
in
developing
countries.
All
over
the world,
4
billion
people had
been
infected. Many studies
show
that
children
who
had
BCG
vaccination, the deadly "miliary
tuberculosis" is hardly seen
-
the
most significant effect
of
having
BCG
vaccination.
Con-
trol
is
2
pronged: active treat-
ment
of
those
infected, render-
ing
them
sputum negative for
AFB; protect those susceptible
-
by
BCG.
With the first avail-
ability of effective
treatment
and
BCG, TB
in
developed
countries
was controlled.
However,
in
developing countries,
1.7 billion
become infected
-
1/3 of
the
world
population.
Even
in
China, 550 million were
ex-
posed
-
one
of
lhe 22
countries
with heavy burden
forTB.
Treat-
ment is required
in
4.5
million
-
no.

in
the world.
The
plan
for
control: chest X-ray;
sputum
smear
for AFB; free
anti-TB
drugs. Currently, 99.7%
of
all
newborns in China are vacci-
nated by
BCG.
A
new
vaccine
is
in
the pipeline: less
reactions;
less pain but more effective.
