GAMMA
KNIFE IS NOT
A
''PANACEA''
As the
trade name
of Elekta,
"Gamma
Knife"
represents the
technology first developed by
a
Swedish neurosurgeon,
Lars
Leksell.
From
the
1950s,
devel-
opment of this special form
of
intense, single
non-f
ractionated
dose irradiation began with the
use
of
a stereotactic
radiosur-
gery
frame
(that
was originally
used
to
guide,
e.9.,
brain biop-
sies
accurately)
to
direct many
beams
of
cobalt-60 gamma rays
to
achieve
tissue
"coagulation
necrosis"
-
an irreversible
lethal
damage achieved precisely
at
the target spot.
With
similar
ef-
fects
to
scalpel cutting, it was
named
"Knife".
An
all-Chinese
version with rotating
cobalt-60
sources for
the
brain and other
parts
of the
body
was
also
developed. Applied
for
functional
neurological treatments
(e.9.,
for
resistant Parkinson's
disease)
and
smalltumors,
it
is
an
ideal,
non-invasive
and
safe
modality.
For large, multiple and infiltrative
malignant
tumors, other
modali-
ties
or
fractionated irradiation are
called
for, othenvise,
unneces-
sary damage
to
normal tissues
may
result.
Gamma Knife
is
not
a "panacea" for
all diseases.
