Once,
a
growing nodule oc-
curred
in
the eyeball
of
a
village
boy, reaching the size of
a
bean.
He was subsequently
admitted.
Operation found a S-mm cyst with
a moving worm seen

finally con-
firmed
to
be
a cyst of
the
pork
tapeworm,
ln
China, the
pork
tape-
worm
is
common
in pork consum-
ing
regions.
The
life
cycle develop-
ment
of the
pork tapeworm
de-
pends on 2 hosts
-
an intermedi-
ate
host and the
final host.
Usually,
the pig acts (up to
a
few years) as
the intermediate
host
and humans,
the final
host.
Thus, the adult para-
site
is usually found in humans
if
the
pork meat is infested by
the
pork tapeworm cysts;
if
the pork
is
not
cooked thoroughly, those cysts
would
then
mature into the adult
worm
inside
the
human gut after
consumption.
With its 4
suckers
and tiny hooks,
it
manages to stick
itself securely
to
the gut wall,
some-
times causing symptoms
of
tummy
ache
or
even diarrhea.
Multiple
worms
may
even cause malnutri-
tion or
gut
obstruction. The eggs of
the
worm are shed together with
the
bowel
openings,
waiting
to
be
ingested by
the pig.
ln this
case,
an ingested egg had lodged itself
in
the eyeball
of the
village
boy
and
developed
into a
young worm.
