She
is
a 3rd
year university
student. ForT-8 years, from the
age
of
15, she
was
afraid
to
meet
even
her
mother
or
brother
-
even the sight
of
them
caused
intense fear. Thorough
psychological probing revealed
that she
had
a
very unfortunate
incidence
of
incest
with
her
brother
when
she
was
really
too
innocent.
Her
mother beat
her
up
then
and
she began to
feel
extremely ashamed
of
herself
upon
reaching
the
age
of
15.
Moreover,
her
father
died
very
early and she believed firmly
that
her
mother
favored
her
brothers
but
beat
her
up
severely.
The
precipitation
incident was
in
the classroom
where
she
thought the
whole
class was
despising
her
by
throwing lots
of
phlegm under
her seat. This served
to
remind
her vividly
of
her
unfortunate
incest.
The
principle
of
therapy
was
to
gradually desensitize
her.
1st
week:
in
a
crowded
place,
to
look
at people
on
the
face for
15
min
1-2
times
a
day;
2nd week onwards: increased
duration
and
frequency;
read
aloud prepared passages
by
herself;then
read and
gradually
recite the same passage
in
the
crowd.
After 4 weeks'therapy,
her
fears
would
gradually
disappear.
