CHOICE OF DOMESTIC BLOOD PRESSURE GAUGE
ln China,
there are
120 million hypertensives;
the
number is ever-increasing. Unfortunately, nearly 80%
(90 million)
of
our hypertensives
do
not know
of
their diagnosis because
they
never
had
their blood pressure
measured.
Unaware,
treatment
for hypertension
could
never be
delivered.
However,
if
each
family
has
a
sphyg-
momanometer
or blood pressure
gauge,
the scene would
be
completely different. Hypertensives
are then
identified and appropriate treatment given
-
complication
rates
of hypertension, e.g., coronaries and stroke,
are
lowered drastically. Moreover, blood pressure
documentation at home
helps
to facilitate clinical staff
in
better monitoring treatment progress.
For
those
18
years or older, a systolic pressure (upper reading)
of
140
mm Hg or above
and/or
diastolic
pressure (lower
reading) of
90
mm Hg or above
signifies hypertension; severe
hypertension: diastolic pressures of
110
mm
Hg or above
-
must
seek treatment
at
a
hospital at
once. Classi-
calsphygmomanometers
are
afiordable and
use
a
mercury
or
Hg
column
-
gives
the
most
direct
reading with
the
Hg
column as indicated
by
sounds
heard
whilst blood pressure changes
steadily
-
the
"Korotkoff
sounds".
Domestic
ones using
indirect
spring
mechanisms and
electronic display are
more
convenient as
measure-
ments can
be
taken on the wrist without
rolling
the sleeves. Thus, each type has
its
own pros and
cons.
