THE
CALAMITY
OF
THE CENTURY
The
giant tsunami from
a
severe underwater earthquake off
the
west
coast of
Sumatra had turned
bustling tourist resorts
of
Phuket
and Maldives into ruins. Over
150,000
people
in
affected countries
have
died and a million homes destroyed. The worst
is
yet to
come
-
various epidemics due
to
the
lack of
water and
food.
The
1960 Chilean tsunami and the Alaskan
tsunami
in 1964
were
also
of
Richter Scale 9 or
over.
The
force
of
Tsunamis due
to
Richter Scale 9
is
equivalent to 200 hydrogen bombs (each bomb
is
like
160 million
tons
of TNT
explosive).
10
years ago,
scientists
and engineers at
the
University
of
Southern
California
had
predicted
likely
spots for Richter Scale
5 or
above
for
the years 2000
to
2010. After
the
1946
Alaskan tsunami
that killed over
150
people in Hawaii,
the
Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) was set up in Hawaii, with
an effective Tsunami Warning System. Most
recently,
the
US National Oceanic
and
Atmospheric Administra-
tion (NOAA)
has
set
up more
tsunameters
on
the
ocean floors
around
USA.
This
is
what
the lndian
Ocean
requires!
For
emergency
relief, all initial lack of co-ordination on
the
delivery of goods and
services
have to
be
overcome
promptly. ln
Jakarta, their Medical Emergency
Rescue
Committee
(MER-C) is overwhelmed.
Above
all,
this calamity has
rekindled
all our
love and
concern for
our
fellow
men.

sent
not only
goods but also medical
and
rescue teams over...
