FOR SURGERY
AND CHEMOTHERAPY AFTER
DISCHARGE
ln China,
the
incidence rate
of
lung
cancer
is
steadily
rising, it not only
tops the
list of
cancers
but also
atfects younger ages than decades ago. Surgery
is
the
mainstay of treatment, supplemented
by
chemo-
therapy and
radiation
therapy and
preferably, the
combined
care
of
Chinese and
Western
medicine for the
best immunity status.
Upon
discharge from the hospital, good nursing care attends
more
to the
individual
personality; least mention
is
on
the
patient's survival status, as quality of life
is
even more relevant.
A
willing
listener, the good nurse
is
friendly, warm, understanding, knowledgeable and regularly gets
in
touch with the
clinicians; she
is
also
meticulous on
the details
of
daily
living and diet.
The patient becomes
more cheerful
and
feels more respected,
rather
than being labeled
as
just any "patient", with little dignity. Hair
loss from
chemotherapy requires
not
just
a
wig
but
also
reassurance
that
it
would grow
back. Chat with
friends;
take
part in recreational activities, e.9.,
outings,
mahjong,
chess,
movies, qigong,
tai
chi;
join
support groups
for
mutual encouragement and
support.
Exercise
the
lungs regularly by exercises done progressively,
for
up
to
30
minutes a day.
Drink
more water. Avoid
too
spicy
food
and
too heavy meals.
Refrain
from smoking
and
excessive drinking. Maintain
a
regular bowel habit. lt
is
the excellent medical care and skill coupled with the
best
nursing care that ensures
the best
recovery!
