VITAMINS
-THE
MORETHE
MERRIER?
Vitamins
are
essentialto
life,
development
and body defense. Gross lack of
vitamins
leads
to
diseases
but
the mechanism is
not
as simple as
it
seems because of
a
delicate
balance among vitamins. Failure
to
take
a
well-
balanced diet or improper cooking
may lead
to
lack of vitamins; others
have persistent
diarrhea
or
liver diseases making the
avail-
ability of vitamins
suboptimal.
Prolonged
use
of broad-spectrum antibiotics would also
kill
off beneficial gut bacteria and affect
the
natu-
ral synthesis of vitamins.
All
kids and women
who are child-bearing or breast-feeding need
extra vitamins. Prolonged use
of
huge doses
of vitamins would
do
more harm than good
-
even poisoning
may occur.
Overdose of vitamin A occurs
when
taking continuously
100,000 units per
day.
As
vitamin A
is
stored
in
the
liver, overdoses take time for
reversal-
stop any over dosages immediately.
Vitamin
D
prevents rickets, a disease
of
the
bones but over
dosage
leads
to
excessive
calcium
levels
in
the
blood or even kidney failure eventually. Prolonged taking of
excessive vitamin
E (over
400 mg per day) leads
to
abnormal formation of blood clots or
even
abnormal
menses; when
the dosage reaches 2000
mg, even
fertility
is affected,
Vitamins
B
and
C are
water
soluble
vitamins
-
theoretically, excessive intakes would be re-excreted through
the
kidneys.
However, over
dosage
of
just
one vitamin item would affect the delicate balance among other vitamins so that these could
not
function
normally
any
more.
