DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

MORE SCIENTIFIC
Calcium supplements that come
in
various forms,
is
now
very
popular,
especially
for
women
-
some would
even
believe calcium contributes
to
their
youthfulness.
Naturally, pregnant
women
have to take extra quantities of calcium,
say,
two
times as
much so as
to
supply
the
bone growth
of the
fetus. Calcium
deficiency causes cramps
and
loss
of
bone density (osteoporosis), and,
later
on, deformity
of
bones. Osteoporosis
worsens
during
the
menopause
and
fracture of the femur (thigh
bone)
or
collapse of the spinal column are
not
uncommon
as
from 40
onwards;
for
men,
the same occurs very much
later,
at around 70
years. Calcium
supplements come mainly from sea shells or from synthetic calcium compounds. Better take more
fish,
prawns, milk products, carrots, green vegetables, seaweed and soy bean products. Avoid pressure cookers
and
micro-wave ovens
-
these
cooking
methods may reduce
calcium
absorption.
Too
much salt affect the
re-absorption
of
calcium
in
the
kidneys. Magnesium and manganese
in
the
diet
must not
be
forgotten. Avoid
smoking and drinking or
too
much coffee
-
vitamin
D
would be diminished so that subsequent absorption of
calcium
is affected. Remember
to
exercise
-
the sun
helps
the
body
to
make
vitamin
D.
lf
really necessary,
take
1-2 grams of calcium each
day.
