HOW
DOES ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE RELATETO
OUR
HEALTH
Environmental pollution
is
rapidly
getting worse and worse, e.9., large
quantities
of
vehicular exhaust,
all
kinds
of
noise,
electro-magnetic waves, huge
waste disposal problems brought about
by
modern
living,
chemical wastes,
etc.
Obviously, a delicate balance must be
achieved, otherwise our
health would
suffer more
and
more. Water pollution
has now reached such serious propor-
tions
that
the
death
or sickness of 25,
000 people per day can be traced to
water pollution or deprivation. Atmo-
spheric pollution is not much less,
as
industrial
and
transport fumes
pollute
the air with coal dust, sulfur dioxide,
carbon monoxide, etc., that amounts
to more than 600 million tons per
year.
Heavy metal polluting the soil would
also affect our health through the food
chain. We only have one earth
-
pro-
tect
it
with due care and concern, e.9.,
through
acts of
limitation, management,
prevention and planning. The United
Nations Conlerence on
the
Human
Environment
held in June
1972
in
Stockholm, Sweden, had
important
proclamations on environmental con-
trol and
was
known as the "Stockholm
Declaration".
ln June
1992, another
United Nations Conference on Environ-
ment and Development was held
in
Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil and was known
as
the "Rio
Declaration". Both are vital
documents to guide
various
countries
on the task of environmental control.
