GETTINGTO KNOWYOUR
IMMUNE SYSTEM
The human immune system com-
bats infection and cancer development.
Apart from inherent immunity, acquired
immunity
refers to
those
related to the
lymphoid
white
cells: the "B cells", the
"T cells" and the "macrophages" that
can engulf bacteria or similar particles.
There are also antibodies developed
against specific antigens.
The
immune
mechanism
is
also responsible
for
scav-
enging
degenerated
cells,
aberrant cells
or
dead cells. lts
job
is very complex
indeed.
lt
must
recognize
one's
own
tissues; once any foreign tissues
are
detected,
an
immediate
attach
is
launched. All those tissues that
are
present at
birth or
acquired before the
immune system matures, are consid-
ered as one's
own
tissues. All
other
tissues
will
be attacked,
including
organs newly transplanted into
the
body.
That
is
why immune suppressive
agents have to be used
afterilansplants.
At times,
the
reaction towards
the
foreign material, e.9., pollen, may
be
excessive and conditions
like hay fever,
asthma, etc., occurs; even hypersensi-
tivity to food items, e.9., prawns,
may
occur.
Auto-immune diseases,
e.9.,
systemic lupus
erythematosis,
nephritis, polyarteritis nodosa,
myas-
thenia gravis, rheumatoid arthritis,
etc.,
represent
mistaken
identify
-
the
immune
system
mistook certain tissue
of
the body to
be
foreign and constantly
attack those. Depending on
the
kind
ol
tissues
mistaken,
different
"auto-
immune"
diseases
occur.
