Gu
Yudong, Professor of Fudan University,
Shanghai, devotes his
life
to the devel-
opment and art
of
hand surgery
-
a
celebrity on micro-vascular surgery.
His
academic contribution
is
internationally
well-known.
He
and
his teacher,
the late
ProfYang Dongyue, had pioneered the
world's grafting of
a
free toe for replac-
ing an
amputated
finger.
Using
his novel
system of "dual vascular supply" ensur-
ing highest degree of grafting success,
grafting
ol
a
free toe with the
toe
joint
also succeeded
later on.
He also
pioneered the world's second case
ol
using the technique
ol
"island" tissue
flaps.
Moreover, he
also implemented
successfully healthy grafting
of
the
contralateral (opposite side) C7
nerve
root
transfened with vascularized nerve
graft
to
repair
brachial
plexus
(arm-pit
nerve
bundle) avulsions.
This
had
etfectively put China on the World Map
of
the
management
of such
injuries.
During
the
recent
2
years, Prof Gu has
also
taken
up a
number
of
vital research
projects with
funding of
millions
of
dollars. He had also proposed
a
new
but
very
appropriate classification of
vascular
variations pertaining to
graft-
ing and transfer. Prof
Gu's proposal was
even more practical, more scientific
and,

years
later, even
better
received
by his peers than
those
proposed
by
the
French, long
well
known for
their
authoritative
work
in the field.
