THEYOUNGEST
HEART
TRANSPLANT
PATIENT
IN
CHINA
ln
1967, the
first and
landmark
heart transplant was done in
South
Africa. Transplants were prone to prob-
lems
of
foreign tissue rejection
by the
recipient's body until Cyclosporin that
can suppress such reactions without
significant
side effects,
were discovered
in
the
80s.
ln
1992, China started to
perform heart transplants. About half of
them are
alive and well.
The youngest
one,
a
12
year-old girl trom Jiangsu,
was still
considered
"invariably
fatal"
1
month before operation. She was for-
tunate to
have a
matching donor
but
the
operation, scheduled on
May 21,
2000,
had to be done in Huzhou where
she
and the whole medical team travelled
to.
She almost died on the way but she
was well enough to
be able
to get
out
of
bed on the 7th post-operative
day.
One week later, she was eating.
She
survived as she did not have problems
of
tissue
rejection nor pneumonia. She
was
finally
discharged on July 5, 2000
and went
back to Jiangsu.
Just
before
discharge,
her
wish was, "This autumn,
on September
1,
I
shall carry
my
school
bag
to school. Eventually,
I
would
like
to become an anaesthetist".
She was
still well
3
months later and all medical
personnel wished her an uneventful
life
and
her dream come true.
