Traditional
Chinese Medi-
cine
(TCM)
concepts describe
4 types
of
asthma:
"cold
asthma"
is
precipitated
by
cold,
e.9.,
during weather
and
tem-
perature change; "heat asthma" is
re-
lated
to endogenous
infective
foci, com-
plicated by
hyper-sensitivity
reactions;
"phlegm asthma" is related to
allergy,
e.9.,
eggs,
sea food, or
pollen, dust
etc.,
so
that the frequency
of
occurrence
is
associated to such exposures. "Unin-
habited asthma"
refers
to general body
weakness
with
tendency
to
hyper-
sensitivities;
the frequency of occur-
rence
is
related to
the physique
of
the
body.
Above all,
the
TCM concepts of
asthma are related
not
just to the lungs
but also to
the
spleen
and
kidney
/
en-
docrine systems. The body fluids accu-
mulates to
lorm
phlegm
-
the
"lung ba-
sis" of asthma. With inappropriate diet,
the "spleen basis" of asthma comes
in;
the
"kidney
/
endocrine basis" is
refer-
ring
to those with weak physique. Man-
agement
is
basis-specific,
e.9.,
by
strengthening
the
kidney
/
endocrine
systems,
there
is non-specific immune
response modification - not unlike
that
of Western medicine.
