INFILTRATION
AND
METASTATIC
SPREAD
OF
CANCER CELLS
Cancer cells
have
various biologi-
cal characteristics, e.9., independent
growth and
activity,
ability lor metastatic
spread to other organs, local infiltration
across
various tissues including
bone,
etc.
The
metastatic spread
ol
cancer
cells is,
in
fact,
a
very active process
that required
initially
detachment
from
the
primary
cancer site,
then
penetrat-
ing host tissues, blood vessels to ar-
rive at
the
blood stream so
that,
even-
tually reaching a distant organ site to
settle
down, grow
to
form
a
new
"colony". Local infiltration
concerns
lo-
cal spread
of
the cancer to adjacent tis-
sue sites. Recently,
a
substance called
"cycline"
is
identified
- it is
related
to
the
control
of
the cyclical activities
of
the
cancer cells. Further studies
may en-
able better control cancer cell activities.
Moreover, metastatic
properties
can
actually be
induced
or
suppressed
through the
experimental
transfer
of
certain oncogenes
-
this
is highly
rel-
evant to
the eventual control of
all
these
metastatic properties of cancer
cells.
However, it must be
understood
that
our
description represents some very gross
simplification, as how cancer cells pro-
ceed
to
have
metastatic spread or
lo-
cal infiltration is much more complex
than we
can
imagine or described
in
simple words.
