The
Relationship Between
Dia-
betes
and Stroke
There is a close
relationship
between
diabetes and
stroke.The
risk
ol diabetes patients having stroke
is
as
high as
1
6-18%.
The
risk
of atheroscle-
rosis (hardening)
of
the brain arteries
is
doubled
in diabetics. The character-
istics of such strokes are: the occur-
rence has no relationship with the age
and
sex;
in
fact, such
strokes
can
occur
at a
relatively young age; the risk
is
more related to the degree of control
ol the blood sugar level rather than the
severity
of
the
diabetes. Hence, preven-
tion
is
through painstaking control
of
the
blood
sugar level
in
diabetics; when the
blood
is
too viscous,
blood thinning
agents may
be required;
a
judicious use
ol
blood
vessel
dilator
drugs, anti-clot
drugs and drugs
to
reduce the water
swelling
in
the
brain or a
combination
of
these
are
available
in
the armamentarium
ol
therapeutic options. Above all, the
collaboration of the patient with
a
determination
to control
not
only
diabetes
but also high blood pressure,
high
blood
cholesterol, over
weight,
etc., are also highly relevant, let alone
the appropriate nursing
care.The regular
use of drugs like aspirin
for
prevention
is
still being deliberated.
