Free
Radicals
and
Cancer
Excessive free radicals
in
the body
can lead to tissue
damage; even
DNA
strands may be broken and
gene
mutation may result;
the
reduced
immunity status
may
also
lead
to
tumour induction. Normally,
the
production
and eradication of
these
f
ree
radicals in the body are
well
controlled. Production
of
free
radicals
may
sometimes
increase,
e.9.,
shock,
brain
injury,
coronaries,
etc.
The
body
mechanism has a built-in system, e.9.,
superoxide dismutase (SOD) for free
radical scavenging. As
during the
long
process
of
lormation
of
cancer
cells,
f
ree
radicals
play an important
part,
anti-oxidants (that can counteract
the
action of
these
free radicals),
have
a
certain
degree of cancer prevention.
Even
fresh fruits
and
vegetables
have
anti-oxidant properties and may
even
help
to
prevent
cancers
to
a
certain
extent.
Cancer
cells have
a
relative
deficiency of anti-oxidants like SOD
-
unlike other
cells, these
malignant
cells are
adversely affected
by
lree
radicals as they are
unable
to eradicate
free
radicals
like
other
tissues.
Some
anti-cancer drugs also
provide
excessive amounts ol free radicals to
achieve cancer cell
kill.
As the
concept
-
ol
free
radicals is quite
complex,
