Jottings on
Poor Blood Supply
to the Heart Muscles
The coronary arteries
have
a
dense
network
of
capillaries.
The
heart
muscles have "myo-globin"
to
trap
more oxygen trom
the
blood; they can
also get energy from several ditferent
metabolic pathways.
When
blood
supply
is reduced to only 50%,
the
heart
may
fail
during sudden exertion or
great
emotional spur; if reduced by 75%, the
heart can fail at any time, even at rest.
Hence, coronaries
can
either
be
"latent"
with
no
symptoms; present as "angina"
on
exertion
or
as "acute
myocardial
infarct"
-
sudden death of the
heart
muscles without
any
warning.
A
special
balloon may be
used
to widen
up
the
narrowed coronary
artery; in
more
severe cases,
a blood
vessel
by-pass
has
to
be put
in
to
take
over the
func{ion
of
the diseased coronary artery. Cer-
tain cases ol coronaries
may
even
be
"temporary" - short
of a
pathological
death, the heart muscles only "fainted"
for
a
few
hours or even a few weeks
but
would subsequently
recover.
Nevertheless, during the "fainting" of
the
heart muscle, heart failure can still
occur if there
is
a sudden exertion or
emotional spur. Above
all,
as very
prompt
action is
required
to
prevent
catastrophes, prevention and regular
check
up are much more prudent.
