Small-pox was
a
very well-known
viral infectious disease but has already
been eradicated gradually since
cow-
pox
vaccination was discovercd.20

countries to stop vaccination for small-
pox.
The first
recording of small-pox
was
by Ge Hong

Modern China
is able
to
eradicate
small-pox by

to
the 18th Century, 600,000 had
died
from small-pox
in
Europe. Even Emper-
ors
were
not
exempt,

the
French

Queen Mary of
England.
ln America,
there were
more
soldiers dying
from small-pox
than the
Civil War itself. ln China, human small-
pox
vaccination aimed at producing
a
milder
form
of
small-pox
but
the
much
safer version, cow-pox vaccination was
discovered
by
Dr
Jenner,
an
English
practitioner who gave up more lucra-
tive
jobs
in
the cities to study why peas-
ants who contracted cow-pox never got
small-pox. As
cow-pox
in humans was
so mild,
he
decided
to
try inducing cow-
pox in an 8-year old boy who did
not
get any
small-pox when
human
small-
pox "vaccination" was given
to
him.
Despite lots
of
very strong opposition
then, cow-pox vaccination eventually
got
rid of
small-pox
in humans.
