President Thomas Jetferson (1743

1826)
was a very respectable
US
President. However, there was
a
rumour
that
he had an affair
with
his
Negro maid Shirley so
that
throughout
two centuries, the mystery had lingered
on. ln

President Jefferson did not
attempt
to
deny nor comment on the
rumour
ol
his atfair; in 1973,
a
young
man claimed
that
he
was Jefferson's
son, however, scholars in Yale Univer-
sity believed that
he
was the
son of
one
of
Jeflerson's nephew; in
1969, schol-
ars
from Duke University wrote
docu-
mentary literature
on
the adorable love
affair but this was to the detriment of
Jefferson's recognized dignity; in
1976,
scholars from Johns Hopkins University
noted that all dates of Shirley's
giving
birth coincided with
Jefferson's
return-
ing home. As after Jefferson's death
in
1826, there were repeated claims
by
alleged Jefferson's offspring,
it
was de-
cided to try the DNA method to solve
the
mystery.
Avery
devious attempt
had
to
be made to get blood
lrom Jefferson's
male blood relatives. Finally
a
compari-
son of the "Y-DNA'
(sexual chromo-
some
that did not
change
with
generations) found they
matched with
the offspring from Shirley
and
the
an-
swer was finally obtained.
