PREVENTION AND
TREATMENT OF INFERTILITY
Normally, a
sexually
active
couple
without
contraception
should
have
-907o successful conception during the
first

years.
lnfertility can either be pri-
mary
-
never pregnant before or sec-
ondary
-
infertility subsequent to suc-
cessful pregnancy. Some women
are
able to conceive
but
unable
to
allow the
foetus to grow to full-term. Around 30%
of
infertility are due to the husband
-
the sperm
number
or vitality are
not
adequate.
For
the wife, congenital uter-
ine
under development,
ovarian
dysfunction, acquired diseases
of
the
womb, etc.,
may be
responsible.
Lack
of
sexual knowledge, technique
or
even
excessive nervousness may
also
be
relevant.
Yet
others are due
to
antFbod-
ies of the
body
fluids
against
the
sperms.
The
author advocated a com-
bined Western and traditional Chinese
method: gynaecology examination,
basal body
temperature documentation,
serum sex
hormone
level
determination, ultra-sound
of
the pelvis,
contrast X-ray
of
the womb
and
tubes
and fibre-optic endoscopy, fluid
/
dis-
charge examination and even chromo-
some and anti-sperm antibody studies.
After this,
the
traditional Chinese
phy-
sician attempts to classify
the
infertility
into 4
types:
kidney "yin"
/'!ang"
defi-
ciency type; excessive damp
and
phlegm
Vpe;
liver and "qi" disturbance
type and blood stasis
type.
Above
all,
have a regular pattern of living,
main-
tain
a
cheerful
mind.
