Prof
TF Liu, a pioneer worker
in
radiation therapy, is
now
77 years
old
but is
still
going strong. Despite
his
accomplishments,
he is still
very
mod-
est and hard working
-
he knows his
mission well. Born in 1923
in
Japan, he
had been attending a English-speaking
inlernalional school,
his second lan-
guage was
French. He
also
managed
to
teach himself Chinese after
he
seftled
in Shanghai
from
1941 onwards.
After
graduation from medical school
in 1949,
he
started his 51-year long
life-time
career at
the
China-Belgium Radium
lnstitute
(now the
Cancer Hospital
of
the
Shanghai Medical University). This was
the only stand-alone cancer hospital
in
China
then.
During
the
Cultural
Rennlution,
he
was
brced
to work as a
r€sident
medical
officer but
he
did not
losa lntereEt in radiation therapy
at
a[.
After the fall
of
the "Gang of
Four'', he
began to establish radium treatment
for
cancer ol the neck
of
the womb, a
ra-
diation
physics
and radiobiology
re-
search set ups. He has
also
taught 700
Chinese doctors specialising in
radia-
tion
therapy
and
is now
serving
as
the
editorial committee for several interna-
tional journals. He
is
still working very
hard

he
delights in contributing
to
mankind!
