BEWARE
OF
ADVERSE
EFFECTS
OF
ANTI.
HYPERTENSIVES
When patients are taking
anti-
hypertensives
for
high blood pressure,
certain adverse
effect
that
may happen
should
be
noted.
There
may be "pos-
tural
hypotension"
-
the
patient may
faint
on
getting
up
too abruptly:
in
that
case, lying
flat
for 20-30 minutes helps.
With certain anti-hypertensives, a
"re-
bound phenomenon" can occur
if
the
medication
is
stopped
too
abruptly. This
would
result
in
unexpectedly serious
high blood
pressure.
ln older patients,
lowering
the
blood
pressure
too
promptly
may
also
cause circulation
insufficiency. Abrupt suspension
of
beta-blockers that
act
by lowering heart
action
may also cause angina; on pro-
longed use, insomnia and excessive
dreaming may result; even attacks ot
asthma may be precipitated in some
sensitive
asthmatics.
Other
anti-
hypertensives may
also
cause
tiredness,
malaise,
and lack
of
concentration.
Nevertheless, as the
incidence of all these adverse effects
are
very
low,
with careful
use, there
should
not be
any real problems
in
clini-
cal
practice.
