As
all
the
complications
of
diabetes are due to
the
poor control of
diabetes, our past experience
ol
poor
control
ol
diabetes
by
purely
Chinese
medical methods should
be
taken. The
incorporation
of
Western anti-diabetic
drugs in Chinese herbal preparations
to achieve
the
best control
the
blood
sugar level seems appropriate.
There
seems
to
be some early evidence
to
suggest that, for non-insulin dependent
diabetics only,
Chinese herbs
can
supplement a Western anti-diabetic
drug (sulphonamide) by reducing the
body
weight
and the
chance
of getting
insulin resistance. There appears to be
some suggestion
of
herbal medicine
providing
reversal for
complications
of
diabetes,
e.9.,
possibility
of
the
potential
for
reversal
of
diabetic
nephritis
(kidney damage due
to
diabetes); simple diabetic retinopathy
(uncomplicated diabetic damage to the
retina of the eye); diabetic peripheral
neuropathy
(diabetic
damage
to
the
peripheral nerves).
All
of these
are
exciting
to
note
but
further
investiga-
tions and clinical trials are indicated
so
as to assess
the
real potential of com-
bining
Chinese
and
Western
manage-
ment methods for diabetes.
