THE BEST POLICY
OF
MANAGEMENT
FOR
THYROTOXICOSIS
COMPLICATING PREGNANCY
Thyrotoxicosis
is
due
to excessive
secretion
of
thyroid hormone
by the thy-
roid
gland.
Symptoms of this common
disorder
are
weight
loss,
tremour
of
hands and excessive heart
beat.
When
it
complicates
pregnancy,
termination of
pregnancy
is
usually not
required.
How-
ever,
as radioactive
iodine can atfect
the
thyroid of the foetus,
it
cannot be used;
hence,
antithyroid
drugs are the first
choice. As the foetus
may
also be
at
fected by
antithyroid
drugs, the
mini-
mal dose and
lrequent
monitoring of
thyroid function are required. Surgery
may
be
considered if medication fails
or
if
side effects of drugs are
unaccep!
able. Close to the delivery, care
must
be
taken to monitor the disease
closely,
so that
the
risk
of
developing thyroid
crisis
would
be minimized. ln
the
past,
it
was believed that significant amounts
of
antithyroid
drugs were secreted
in
the
mother's milk
to
result
in
thyroid
in-
sufficiency
of
the
new born; recently,
it
was confirmed that
the
amount
se-
creted is not significant enough to af-
fect
the
baby's
thyroid gland.
ln
general,
all such specific medications should al-
ways
be
taken
by
the doctor's prescrip-
tion.
