MONITORING
OF DIABETES
Monitoring
of
blood sugar
level
(fasting and
2
hours
after food)
is
paramount for good control of diabetes
to
obviate complications,
apart
from
taking note of all clinical
symptoms.
Urinary sugar level
is
less reliable, as
it
depends also on the threshold
at
the
kidney

Above the threshold,
urinary sugar
levels
parallel
blood
sugar levels
but
the greatest risk
is
that
blood sugar levels can become
too
low
and
serious sudden
fainting
would
come
without
warning.
Checking
capillary blood sugar level
is
now
a
self-test
-
as
such
levels are slightly
higher than those of the
standard
venous blood sample, they are
good
for
monitoring treatment but not
for
diagnosis.
HbA'lc
levels in
the
blood
can reflect
the
state of diabetic control
during
the
last 1-3 months
- a
valuable
tool
in
the
diagnosis
and
monitoring
of diabetes.
Other vital monitoring items
are: blood pressure, serum
triglycer
ides, cholesterol,
lipo-proteins.
Recently, UAER (urinary
albumin
excretion rate): determining
"micro"
amounts
of
albumin
over
24-hour urine)
is
said
to
be
a
more sensitive test
for kidney dysfunction.
