CORONARIES AND STROKES:
THE NUMBER ONE KILLER
FOR MANKIND

China,
as
from the 80s, coro-
naries
and
strokes have
overtaken
infectious diseases
to
be
the number
1
killer.
The
percentage
is
comparable
with
the West.
For
example,
in the
early
90s, amongst male
city
dwellers
in
China
of age 45-74,
the
death
rate for
these
two
diseases combined
was
37.9%.
For
the same period, that
of
Canada
was
37.2o/";
Denmark, 38.9%;
USA,
41.3%.
Cunently,
apart
from
the
difference
between North
and
South
China, the incidence and death
rates
of coronaries in large cities and their
suburbs are much higher than inland
cities and rural
areas.
Amongst
the
male Chinese
population
aged 24-7
4,
the
incidence
rate of coronaries varies
from
1s./roo,ooo
to
t/,oo,ooo
stroke
inci-
dence
rate also varied from

to
to/,oo,ooo.
High blood
pressure,
high
total blood
cholesterol, smoking and
obesity were independent
risk
factors
for coronary
disease; as
for
strokes,
high blood
pressure, smoking
and
obesity. Since environmental factors
are
responsible,
it
pays
to
remedy
the situation
without
delay.
