WHAT ISTHE
OPTIMAL BLOOD PRESSURE?
Patients' high blood
pressure
should be reduced to
a
level
that
has
the
lowest incidence
of
stroke
and
coronaries but without affecting
the
blood supply
to
the
kidneys,
the heart
and
the
brain.
The Hypertension
Opti-
mal Treatment (HOT) Study that
involved 18,790 cases from 26 coun-
tries in
North and
South America,
Europe, Asia and had achieved
a
median
follow
up of 3.8 years showed
that the desirable blood pressure
is
13e/r..
Going below
this
figure confers no
added advantage. ln a dedicated
effort
to
lower
the blood pressure, the
addi-
tion of 75
mg
of
aspirin
per
day
will
further
reduce
the
risk of coronaries.
The
HOT Study also showed
that
an
optimal blood pressure would raise the
quality
of
life
of
patients.
lt was
also
found that during therapy, most patients
would require a combination of
medi-
cations.
From
the
results
of
1,501
diabetics, bringing the diastolic
blood
pressure
to 80 or
lower would
half
the
incidence
of
coronaries as com-
pared with
that
of
diastolic
pressure
of
90
or
higher.
