TUBERCULOSIS
REVISITED
Tuberculosis of
the
lung is again
on
the
increase
alter
successful
control during earlier years. As there
is
a lapse of many years,
it is
appropriate
to
upgrade the current knowledge of
not
only the public
but
also the medical
professionals. When there were
no
eflective anti-tuberculosis drugs, the
main criteria
lor
diagnosis was chest
X-ray.
ln the
40's, anti-tuberculosis
drugs
began
to
be available;
the
treatment duration was long -
up
to
1.5
to 2 years. ln the 60's,
convenient
sputum smears provided
a
prompt
method
of
detecting infectivity
and
facilitated
infection
control.
ln
the
70's,
newer drugs were available
and,
with
the appropriate combination
manage-
ment,
the treatment duration could
be
shortened to around 6 months.
lt
has
been shown by many clinical trials
that
the shorter duration is
adequate for
most patients. ln fact,
the
paramount
condition
is
that the patient
must take
the
medication
consistently
during
the
6
months of treatment.
