THE
FUTURE OF
CLONING
TECHNOLOGY
Normal
sexual
reproduction
depends on
the
male and
lemale
mating and the fertilization
of
the
ova
by
the
sperm. Cloned
animals,
e.9.,
"Dolly" was a sheep produced
by
"self-fertilization".
ln
the 70's, genetic
engineering was able
to
transmit
genetic material from one
organism
to
another; also
can
transform the
bacteria
E Coli
to
produce special
proteins, e.9., interferon. ln the
80's,
genetic engineering technology was
already successfully applied
to
animals.
ln
the
90's,
cloning
of
animals and even
man
was
possible.
The advantages
ol
cloning
are:
cloned mice
provide
an
uniform breed
for certain
exact
experimentation on laboratory animals;
replication
of
the best breed animals;
combined with genetic engineering
techniques,
to
produce
biological
modifiers;
if
humans
are
cloned,
provides
exact-match organs for
transplantation as well as for
manag-
ing
infertility. However, human
cloning
is socially and ethically
very
unaccept-
able and
complicated problems ol
identity and
the
human rights issue
for
organ donation
exist.
Hence,
in
America, Denmark,
UK
and
Belgium,
human
cloning
is not allowed.
