SYMPTOM
THAT CANNOT BE
IGNORED
Pain causes
a natural
reflex to
raise
the
blood pressure,
breathe
rapidly, tense
the
muscles and getting
ready
to
fight
or to
tlee.
As
most
diseases are accompanied by
pain,
the
symptom
just cannot
be ignored
without
attecting
one's
health.
Severe
and chronic pain itself would affect
adversely
the general condition,
eg,
general weakness, sleeplessness, loss
ol appetite and emotional disturbance
etc.
The
pain
threshold varies
from
people to
people.
However,
infection
would lower
it
but local
pain killers (local
anaesthetics), nervous system iniuries,
central-acting pain killers would raise
it.
Diverting the attention may help to
decrease pain; so will strong emotional
stress
(fear
or
anger).
On the other
hand,
a
troubled mind or psychological
upset would increase the physical pain.
The
main causes
of
pain are: hurting
the
peripheral nervous system; hurting
the tissues, inlarct,
infection
etc;
stimulation by chemical
or
physical
means; mechanical stimulation
of
peripheral
nerves.
There are
many
types of pain but unfortunately, there is
no uniform classification
up
to
now.
Trealment
of pain is many faceted and
depends on the
cause:
nerve block,
acupuncture,
operation,
message and
pain killers
etc.
Many hospitals
have
now set
up
specialties for
pain
and
pain
clinics
for
the
best
management
of
pain.
The World
Health
Organization
proposes Pain-free Cancer
by
2000).
All those working towards
this
goal
deserves to be highly respected.
