PREVENTION
AND
TREATMENT
OF
ANOREXIA
NERVOSA
IN
YOUNG
GIRLS
Anorexia nervose is a condition
with
the
symptom
of
loss of the desire
to eat, and
is
accompanied
by
severe
psychologic disturlcances. Physical ex-
amination of
the
patients with
the
con-
dition
reveals
emaciation,
often
of
ex-
treme degree. Anorexia nervosa
is
commomly seen
in
adolescent young
girls, especially
in
the
ages
lrom
12
to
25.
The
incidence has been increased
up
to
5% in the
lemale
population.
Treatment
of
this condition
is
difficult.
Since patients with anorexia nervosa
invariably exhibit severe psychologic
disturbances. Optional manageinent
necessitates resolution of patient's dis-
torted ideas about eating. lmprovement
has
also been obtained
by
the use of
operant reinforcement techniques. With
approach,
access
to physical activity,
recreation, and personal
attention
is
made contingent on weight gain
by
the
patients.
ln
extreme cases it may
be
necessary
to
nourish the patient
with
parental
or
nasogastric feeding.
