THE DANGER
OF
ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
With
the
rapid increase of
the
world's
population
and
industrial, agri-
cultural production, environment pollu-
tion
is
worsening
rapidly.
ln
the atmos-
phere, the ozone layer absorbs exces-
sive
ultra-violet
rays from the sun so
that
living
creatures
on earth
would
not be
over-exposed.
Unfortunately, freon gas
as used in refrigeration, air-condition-
ing, aerosol sprays and stylofoam, can
damage
the
ozone
layer.
For
every
1%
loss
of
the ozone
layer,
there may
be
a
27o
increase in incidence of skin can-
cer, especially
in
whites.
Carbon diox-
ide accumulated through burning coal,
petrol and natural gas, etc., has
in-
creased the natural "green-house"
ef-
fect
of
the
earth and
temperatures
are
higher so
that insects prollferate
and
the
Arctic ice melts and the sea level is
ris-
ing.
With excessive burning
of coal
and
petrol, sulphur dioxide
is
produced and
corrosive
acid rain
results.
Uncontrolled
contamination makes natural water
more
and
more
scarce.
Forestry losses
through fire and felling, large area
oil
spills, excessive use
of
agricultural
chemicals, etc., have
led
to
rapid loss
of
flora
and
fauna.
We
must
counter-
act before the earth becomes uninhab-
itable.
