Hair
can be long or short.
Main-
tenance of
normal
hair quantity
and
quality
is
a sign of good
health.
Nor-
mally,
long
hair
of
the head
are replaced
in 2-6
years and short ones
of
the body,
in
50-150
days.
Excessive and
rapid
hair loss (except inherent cases) may
be due
to
local injury
and various
chronic diseases, severe infection, hor-
monal disturbance (especially thyroid
hormone deficiency), psychiatric con-
ditions, drug side effects and certain
skin
conditions,
etc.
Excessive hair
growth
is
commonly due to Cushing's
syndrome (excessive secretion of ster-
oids) and
administration
of certain
drugs
like male hormones
or
cortico-steroids.
Rarely,
it
may even be a manifestation
of
cancer.
Abnormal gray
hair
occurs
in excessive stress, intense worries
or
due
to
local skin
conditions.
Some
trigerminal neuralgia (painful

cranial
nerve) patients may
even
have gray
hair
along
the
supply of
the
nerve.
Hence,
if
abnormalities of hair occurs,
there
is
no need
to
panic as seeking medical
advice would often enable the correct
diagnosis
and
the
appropriate
treat-
ment.
