REFLECTING
ON THE
CENTURY'S DISASTER
The smoke caused
by the
lorest
fires in lndonesia not only brings about
serious economic loss
in
that
country,
but also
it
has caused
tremendous
harm
to
the
health of
the
populace.
The
cul-
prit
is
the
lndonesia government which
did not spend much effort in protecting
the
mountain forests.
The
most urgent
thing to do
is
for
the
international com-
munity
to
help
lndonesia
and
its
neighbouring countries
to
overcome
this crisis.
The forest fires in lndonesia
are
still spreading. The ecological
system
has
been heavily damaged. Experts
point
out
that destroying
the
forests and
the environment would only harm
the
population and living beings
all
over the
world.
For
example,
in
June, six
prov-
inces in Australia were experiencing
lower
than
normal water levels.
The
El
Nino phenomenon at present
is
similar
to the great drought in
1982
which cost
the Australians a loss of 20%
in
their
G.N.P.. Therefore,
as
scientific
progress
is
making
its
way into
the
21
century,
people's
consciousness
in
environmental
protection
has
to
be
re-
inforced.
