CANCER
PREVENTION
New diagnostic and therapeutic
techniques have been
introduced
in
recent years which facilitate earlier de-
tection
of
malignant disease and the
probability
of
curing cancer. Because
of
this,
increasing emphasis is being
given to the education
of
physicians,
public health groups, and the lay popu-
lation concerning cancer prevention.
Much of cancer prevention
is
implicit
in
the
understanding
of
etiologic
and
epiologic,
epidemiological studies,
which
provide
imporlant
information
regarding hereditary
and
environmen-
tal causal factors ol
cancer.
ldentifying
the approximate cause of
a
maior type
of cancer such as cigarettes in relation
to lung cancer and
etc.
may lead to et-
fective prevention. This type of preven-
tion
is
to
protect
the
human boby from
invasion
of any
potential carcinogenic
factor, and
is
thus called
primary
can-
cer prevention. However, it
is
particu-
larly important to identify populations
at
increased
risk and to apply
the
appro-
priate detection techniques
to
those
populations, for instances, the
first-de-
gree
female
relatives
ol
women with
breast cancer, heavy smokers,
and
populations among whom sexual activ-
ity
begins at
an
early age, since the risk
of cervical cancer among those
is
sub-
stantially greater. Obviously, this
may
lead to a
secondary
and
etfective
pre-
vention ol cancer, and
is
called second-
ary prevention which means prevention
of cancer development
in
populations
at high risk.
