SURVEY
OF
OBESITY AND
ITS
COMPLICATIONS
IN
SHANGHAI AREA
ln economically well-developed
countries, obesity has become one of
the
major
social
problems among oth-
ers
like
aids, drug abuse
and
alcohol-
ism
etc.
Shanghai City and
its neigh-
boring provinces are one
of
the
pock-
ets
of
major industrialization in China.
The
author of
the
paper designed and
conducted
an
epidemiological survey
of
obesity and
its
complications
in
Shang-
hai area from
December
of
1995 to
September
of
1996.
From a prelimi-
nary
study
of
30,000 local
residents,
the
findings indicated
that
obeses adults
accounted for

2.68
% of the
total popu-
lation
(15%
for
male
and
10.68% for
female),
and
11
.357"
lor
children
(14.7%
tot
male and 7.9% for female).
There
is
a noticeable bimodl age distri-
bution pattern, i.e. a peak during
7
to
12
years
(13.9%)
and another
peak
during
60
to
70
years old (22.95"/")
The
main complications stem from fatty
liverm hypertension and high
blood
vis-
cosity
etc.
The data were analyzed and
compared with those
of
the
USA,
which
has a high
number
of obesity
in the
world.
Dietary management and exer-
cise plan, especially for children,
has
been suggested
in
the
paper
for
pre-
vention
and treatment.
