PREVENTION
AND TREATMENT
OF
OSTEOPOROSIS BY
A COMBINED TRADITIONAL
CHINESE
AND
WESTERN
THERAPY
Osteoporosis
is
the
term
used
to
describe
a
group
of
diseases
of
diverse
etiology which are characterized
by a
reduction in
the
mass of bone per unit
volume to a level
below
that
required
for adequate mechanical support func-
tion.
The
reduction in bone mass
is
not accompanied by a significant
re-
duclion
in
the
ratio of
the mineral
to
the
organic phase of the bone, nor by any
reproducible abnormality
in
the
struc-
ture ol either the mineral
or
the organic
matrix.
Histologically,
osteoporosis
is
characterized by a decrease in
the
number and size
ol
the trabecular of
cancellous
bone
with
normal
width of
the osteoid seams.
Its most
frequent symptoms
ob-
served
are
pain
in
the back and
deform-
ity of the
spine
at its advancing stage.
Fracture of long bone are most
com-
mon
in
the hip,
humerus,
and
wrists
etc.
Various
modes
of therapy
currently
used
are
calcium, vitamin D
and
estrogen
preparations
etc.
Other
newer hormones with enhancing
cal-
cium deposition
in
the bone, such
as
calcitonin, are also advocated
with
quick improving etfect on bone
pain.
Therapies
using
traditional
Chinese
herbs
with
promotion
and
strengthen-
ing of bone formation and kidney func-
tions are also popularly used
in
China.
The present
paper
will go into details
for the
preventive and therapeutic
efficacies
using the
combined TCM
and
Western
medical methods.
