OSTEOPOROSIS
IN
MENOPAUSAL
WOMEN
The
menopause is usually
her-
alded
by
a
period of menstrual irregu-
larity, reflecting a process of
aging.
ln
addition to a
depletion
of oocytes and
a
diminution
of
sex hormone secretion,
another prominent change in meno-
pausal women
is
osteoporosis,
a
proc-
ess of
bone
loss.
They occur
in
approxi-
malely
25o/"
of
menopausal women.
Current evidence suggests that, after
the age
of
forty
to
fifty, skeletal mass
begins
to
decline at a laster rate
in
women than in man.
It is not clear
what
is
the exact
cause
of
this age associated decrease
in bone mass occuring particularly
in
old
women.
Osteoporosis would not
be
identified
at
its
early
stage, however,
its most
frequent symptoms
of
pain rec-
ognised
in
the back and deformity of
the spine
have been presented and
could
be
signals for making diagnosis.
Osteoporosis have now be evi-
dent as a clionical problem since the
level
of
reduction in bone mass may
be
sutficient to result
in bone
fracture
after minimal trauma with severe com-
plications.
Thus any procedures di-
rected
to
prevent osteoporosis is
im-
portant and seeking further medical ad-
vice
is recommended.
