Diseases
of
the heart and cir-
culatory system
are a
common that
underlies the major cause
of
death
in
the
United States and most
in-
dustrialized societies
in
the
world.
The correct interpretation
of
symp-
toms and signs in patients with or-
ganic cardiovascular disturbances
may
be
particularly important,
but
frequently
difficult.
Such
persons,
in
addition
to
having symptoms
re-
sulting
from
their
disease,
may
also
develop functional complaints
re-
ferable to the cardiovascular sys-
tem.
The
unraveling of symptoms
and signs due to organic heart dis-
ease
from those which are
not di-
rectly
related is
another
important
and challenging task
in
these
pa-
tients.
ln addition, curing
of the
disease also depends
upon the
correct and early
treatment.
